S&D’s wedding at the Holiday Inn Seafront in Brighton, East Sussex, was a brilliant mix of seaside atmosphere, genuine emotion and plenty of fun. With the iconic Brighton seafront providing the backdrop, their day was full of those fleeting moments that can so easily be missed: the nervous anticipation, laughter, tears, hugs and spontaneous celebrations that make every wedding completely unique.

As a candid street photographer who shoots weddings, my approach is very different from traditional wedding photography. Rather than directing the day or constantly pulling people away for photographs, I work quietly and unobtrusively, allowing things to happen naturally and anticipating the moments as they unfold. My street photography background has taught me to look for interesting moments, connections, expressions, light and composition in the chaos of everyday life, and I bring exactly the same instinct to a wedding.

Weddings at the Holiday Inn Seafront, Brighton

The Holiday Inn Seafront Brighton is a great setting for a wedding, particularly if you love the idea of combining your wedding day with the energy and atmosphere of the seaside. Sitting directly on Brighton’s famous seafront, the hotel puts the beach, promenade and distinctive character of the city right on your doorstep. It provides a relaxed backdrop for a wedding that feels very much part of Brighton rather than being separated from it.

And that fits rather nicely with the way I photograph weddings.

A Different Approach to Wedding Photography

I’m not a traditional wedding photographer. I’m a candid street photographer who shoots weddings, and my approach has developed from years of photographing real life on the streets. I don’t spend the day manufacturing moments or constantly arranging people into positions. Instead, I watch, anticipate and react to what is happening in front of me.

For me, a wedding is full of the same ingredients that make great street photography: people, movement, light, expressions, relationships, humour and those completely unpredictable moments that last for only a second. The difference is that at a wedding, all of those things are happening around people you actually care about.

No Forced Poses. No Manufactured Moments.

That’s why I believe candid wedding photography works particularly well for couples who don’t want their wedding photographs to feel staged. If the thought of spending hours being posed, repeatedly called away from your guests or told to “look this way” fills you with dread, my approach could be very different from what you are expecting from a wedding photographer.

I want you to experience your wedding rather than spend the day having it photographed.

Of course, there will be photographs of the people you love, the details you’ve spent months choosing and all the important moments of the day. But alongside those, I’m looking for the things you probably didn’t notice at the time, the reaction of a friend during the speeches, a fleeting glance between two people, a child causing chaos, someone laughing in the background or a completely unexpected moment on the Brighton seafront.

Of course, if you want a small number of posed portraits I can arrange to do these quickly for you, but the main reason you will be looking to book me for your wedding day is my candid documentary wedding photography.

The Moments You Didn’t See

Those are often the photographs that become the most valuable.

Years later, it’s not necessarily the perfectly arranged photograph that takes you straight back to your wedding day. It can be the completely unplanned photograph that captures exactly how it felt to be there.

That’s what I’m looking for.
