My ‘On This Day’ series looks back at a photo shot on that exact date in the past, ideally images from my archives that have not been widely shared before.
Although I started shooting street photography with any real purpose in 2006, it wasn’t until 2007 did I start to get any images I was pleased with. This one, shot in Blackpool on 15 April 2007, was most probably the first shot where I felt I was on to something.
It’s certainly not a great shot, but it feels important now in terms of my developing vision as a street photographer – even if it bears the influence of Martin Parr: working class family on holiday up North against a colourful but gritty backdrop.
It would be another 6 months before I would get what I class as my first good street photograph – but this one was an important step towards it.
