G&R’s wedding at The Old Ship Hotel in Brighton was exactly the kind of wedding I love to photograph. Set right on the seafront, The Old Ship provides a brilliant backdrop for a wedding day that feels relaxed, personal and unmistakably Brighton.

My approach to weddings is heavily influenced by my background in candid street photography. I’m not interested in manufacturing moments, directing every detail or turning a wedding into a series of staged photographs. Instead, I work quietly and unobtrusively, looking for the unexpected moments, fleeting expressions, odd little details and genuine interactions that make each wedding completely unique.

For G&R, that meant simply being there and watching what unfolded around me. From the nervous anticipation before the ceremony to the laughter, chaos and celebrations afterwards, the day was full of those wonderfully unplanned moments that can so easily disappear.

A Wedding at the Old Ship Hotel, Brighton

The Old Ship Hotel is one of those Brighton wedding venues that feels perfectly at home in the city. Sitting directly on the seafront, right in the heart of Brighton, it has the location, character and atmosphere that make it such an interesting place to photograph a wedding.

With the beach, promenade and streets of Brighton immediately outside, there are opportunities for photographs everywhere. But for me, the real attraction isn’t simply the backdrop. It’s what happens within it.

A wedding at the Old Ship Hotel can be full of movement, people, noise, laughter and those wonderfully unpredictable moments that you simply can’t manufacture. And that’s exactly where my approach comes into its own.

Wedding Photography Inspired by Street Photography

I don’t approach weddings like a traditional wedding photographer.

My background is in candid street photography, and I’ve spent more than 20 years photographing real life as it happens. That has shaped the way I photograph weddings. Rather than constantly directing people, arranging moments or asking everyone to look at the camera, I prefer to step back and observe.

I’m looking for the moments that happen naturally, the glance between two people, a burst of laughter, someone lost in thought, children causing chaos, guests enjoying themselves or something completely unexpected happening in the background.

In other words, I’m photographing the wedding rather than directing it.

Finding the Unexpected

Brighton is a particularly good place for this approach because it’s such an unpredictable city. The Old Ship Hotel sits at the centre of it all, with the seafront and streets providing a constantly changing backdrop to the day.

I’m not interested in simply photographing the obvious. Anyone can take a photograph of a bride and groom standing in front of a beautiful building. I’m more interested in what is happening around them.

That’s one of the things I love about street photography: you never quite know what is going to happen next. I bring that same mindset to weddings.
