S&K’s wedding at the Meon Valley Hotel in Hampshire was exactly the kind of wedding I love to photograph: full of genuine moments, laughter, emotion and all the wonderfully unpredictable things that happen when people simply enjoy being together. Set in the beautiful Hampshire countryside, the Meon Valley Hotel provides a relaxed setting for weddings, with plenty of opportunities for photographs both indoors and around the grounds.
My approach to wedding photography is rooted in my background as a candid street photographer. Rather than directing the day or constantly asking people to pose, I prefer to observe, anticipate and capture things as they naturally unfold. The result is a collection of authentic wedding photographs that feel like memories rather than staged recreations.
For S&K, that meant photographing the atmosphere, characters and fleeting moments that made their day uniquely theirs…unobtrusively, honestly and with plenty of clicks of the camera.
Meon Valley Hotel Wedding Photography
Here’s S&K’s Meon Valley Hotel wedding, told honestly and naturally through a small number of selected photographs from the day. Meon Valley Hotel: A Hampshire Wedding Venue
Set within the Hampshire countryside, the Meon Valley Hotel is a lovely setting for a wedding, combining a relaxed countryside atmosphere with the facilities you would expect from an established Hampshire wedding venue. Surrounded by greenery and open spaces, there are plenty of opportunities for photographs away from the more formal parts of the day, while the hotel itself provides a practical setting for everything from the ceremony through to the wedding breakfast and evening celebrations.
One of the things I particularly enjoy about photographing weddings at venues such as Meon Valley is that there is always something happening. Guests arrive, old friends meet again, nervous anticipation turns into excitement, and the atmosphere gradually builds throughout the day. Those little moments are often the photographs that mean the most afterwards.
Wedding Photography Without The Clichés
My approach to wedding photography is different from traditional wedding photography. I’m a candid street photographer who shoots weddings, rather than a wedding photographer who happens to take a few candid photographs.
That distinction is important.
Street photography has taught me to watch what is happening rather than constantly trying to make something happen. I look for the fleeting expressions, unexpected interactions, funny moments, interesting light, gestures and little details that other people might overlook.
At S&K’s wedding, that meant allowing the day to unfold naturally and photographing what was actually happening rather than continually interrupting it for photographs. There are no elaborate poses, forced smiles or endless instructions. Instead, I try to become part of the background and let people get on with enjoying themselves.
The result is a set of wedding photographs that hopefully feels authentic to the day itself; photographs that don’t just show what your wedding looked like, but remind you how it actually felt.
