God, It’s So Fucking Croydon!

It was my nemesis, I hated Croydon with a real vengeance. It represented everything I didn’t want in my life, everything I wanted to get away from. I think it’s the most derogatory thing I can say about somebody or something: ‘God, it’s so fucking Croydon!’” – David Bowie

Croydon’s long had “bit of a rep”. Not helped by stories of body parts in a suitcase found in the bus station, the riots of 2011 or the gang culture and associated knife crime. Add to this the ugly post-war architecture and you have a place often mocked by outsiders.

I lived there from 2002 until 2013, but continue to still visit, and never once had an issue there. I always found it alive and vibrant. These photographs were made between 2007 and 2020. This is a Cronx tale.
